KATHMANDU, SEPTEMBER 9 — Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli stepped down from office on Tuesday afternoon, his secretariat confirmed, following two days of deadly Gen Z-led protests across Nepal.
The resignation comes in the wake of massive demonstrations against corruption, restrictions on civil freedoms, and violent crackdowns by security forces. On Monday, clashes near the Federal Parliament and other sites in Kathmandu left 19 people dead and more than 500 injured, intensifying public outrage and increasing pressure on the government.
Despite heavy security deployment and curfews across the Kathmandu Valley, protesters have continued to defy restrictions, keeping the momentum of the movement alive.
In his resignation letter to President Ramchandra Paudel, Oli acknowledged the gravity of the national crisis and emphasized the need for a constitutional way forward. The letter stated:
“I was appointed Prime Minister on Asar 31, 2071 BS, under Article 76(2) of the Constitution of Nepal. Considering the extraordinary situation prevailing in the country and in order to facilitate further efforts toward a constitutional political solution and problem resolution, I hereby resign from the office of Prime Minister, effective immediately, under Article 77(1)a of the Constitution.”
Oli’s departure marks a dramatic political shift, triggered by the unprecedented rise of Gen Z protesters demanding accountability, justice, and systemic reform.
